Over time, all central heating systems accumulate sludge which can seriously affect the efficiency, and therefore increases the costs of running it.
Power flushing is the term used for cleaning a central heating system using water at high velocity but low pressure, so that no physical damage is caused. The aim of a powerflush is to restore the full circulation of water around the central heating system.
There are a number of signs that you may need a power flush. These include:
- The slow warming of the heating system
- Excessive noise from the boiler or heating system pump
- Cold areas on radiators
- Discoloured water when you bleed the radiators
- Water fluctuating between hot and cold
It is also recommended that the powerflush process is carried out if you intend to connect a new boiler to an old heating system. This is because any contaminants already present in the heating system can quickly damage the internal pipe work of the new boiler.
How does power flushing work?
A powerflushing pump is simply connected into the heating system, either across pump couplings, across the tails of one radiator, or wherever most practicable. The powerful flow combined with a flow reverser device, will dislodge deposits and corrosion which resist traditional system cleaning methods. This enables fresh clean water to be forced through the heating system, pushing the contaminated water out. Radiators are individually flushed, without removing or disconnecting them from the system, by directing the full output of the pump through each radiator separately.
At the end of the flushing process, the system contains fresh clean water and will be protected with an inhibitor.
